VEHICLE ROLLOVER
CLAIMS
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), rollover accidents are a leading cause of motor vehicle fatalities in the U.S. When a car crash causes a vehicle to flip over on to its roof or side, it is considered a rollover accident.
These types of motor vehicle crashes can be deadly, and may be caused by reckless driving or vehicle defects.
Data shows that pickup trucks and SUVs are the vehicles that are the most susceptible to roll over during an accident. In part, this is due to the fact that these vehicles have a higher center of gravity that smaller passenger vehicles, but any car could rollover in an accident depending on the conditions.
In 2008, the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) conducted a study about SUVs involved in rollover accidents and found that increased roof strength in these vehicles could have prevented a high number of motorist fatalities. The study found that if the roof strength of all SUVs involved in rollover crashes had been the same as the strongest roof in the test, approximately one third of fatal injuries to SUV occupants could have been avoided.
