SCAFFOLD AND
LADDER FALLS
Scaffolding and ladders are a common feature of most construction sites. Working at great heights carries many inherent risks, especially when scaffolding or ladders are not properly constructed or maintained. Even though construction companies are required under strict labor laws to inspect each site with safety engineers, construction workers still face a great risk of work-related injury.
When construction workers fall from scaffolds or ladders that were not properly constructed or secured, the results can be devastating or even fatal.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) imposes strict regulations on all construction sites in order to protect the safety of workers. If these regulations are not met, or are ignored by construction companies or supervisors, the safety and lives of construction workers could be at risk.
OSHA has very strict guidelines about the construction and maintenance of scaffolding on work sites, including:
- Scaffolding must support at least 4 times the maximum intended load.
- Fall protection systems and guardrails must be in place for employees more than 10 feet above a lower level.
- Scaffolding must be inspected for visible defects prior to each work shift and after any event that could affect the structural integrity.
- Employers must train each employee who works on a scaffold on the proper procedures to avoid safety hazards.
These are only a few of the regulations set forth by OSHA that are intended to protect construction workers from scaffold or ladder-related injuries. Unfortunately, injuries caused by scaffold and ladder falls still happen when construction companies or supervisors are negligent and disregard industry regulations.
