It is vitally important that pedestrians always be aware of their surroundings, especially when close to train tracks. There are far too many tragedies of commuters being seriously injured or killed by trains. Much more needs to be done in order to improve pedestrian safety around train tracks and stations in New York.
A man fatally struck by a Metro-North Commuter Railroad train near the Bronxville train station on Thursday, 11/5 was one of more than a dozen pedestrians killed on Lower Hudson Valley rail lines since 2010.
According to Federal Railroad Administration statistics, 14 people were killed and 13 others were injured on rail lines in Westchester and Rockland counties since the start of 2010. Pedestrians struck by trains on rail lines account for nearly two-thirds of all rail-related fatalities.
At Fellows Hymowitz Rice, New York and New Jersey Personal Injury and Pedestrian Accident Law Firm, we urge all commuters and pedestrians to take special precautions around railroad tracks. These statistics are disturbing, and demonstrate how widespread this serious safety issue has become in our communities. Whether a pedestrian or a motorist, please be vigilant at all gate crossings and stations, whether crossing the tracks or getting on or off a a train.
