There has been a national Panera Bread voluntary recall of cream cheese products from its bakery/café’s. This includes 14 locations in the Hudson Valley after one of the cafés showed listeria contamination.
The organism is called listeria monocytogenes. It can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in children and the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. It is particularly harmful to pregnant women since it causes miscarriages and stillbirths.
Otherwise healthy people only suffer short-term symptoms which can be somewhat debilitating including high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, diarrhea and abdominal pain.
Panera Bread is located in the Hudson Valley in the following locations:
- Bedford Hills
- Cortlandt
- Fishkill
- Nanuet
- Monroe
- Newburgh
- Pelham
- Poughkeepsie
- Scarsdale
- Ulster
- West Nyack
- White Plains
- Yonkers
No one has been affected thus far and the voluntary recall is commendable.
The cream cheese affected by the recall comes in both 2 and 8-ounce varieties. They are the following:
- plain cream cheese
- reduced-fat plain cream cheese
- reduced-fat chive & onion cream cheese
- reduced-fat honey walnut cream cheese
- reduced-fat wild blueberry cream cheese.
