According to the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety, 88% of drivers between the age of 19 and 24 admitted to texting while driving, running red lights or speeding.
Millennials admitted to:
- Typing and sending texts & emails while driving at accelerated speeds
- Running red lights when they could have stopped safely
- Driving at least 10 miles over the speed limit in a school zone
This report showed that drivers between the age of 19 and 24 believe that their dangerous driving patterns are acceptable. Driving in a car has become more dangerous and motor vehicle accidents continue to increase each year. Since 2015 motor vehicle related deaths in the United States have increased to 34,092 – a 7% increase from 2014.
Research shows that 40% of drivers have reported using their phone while driving, and 78% of drivers stated this behavior is unacceptable. What a contradiction. This is what is happening on our roads every day. People, especially young adults, are texting, emailing and speeding on the roads that we all share, and this dangerous behavior is causing more and more serious car accidents. This must stop.
Millennials and all drivers need to understand the deadly consequences that come along with using a phone when driving. The same is true for speeding, especially while in school zones placing children at risk.
