In the blink of an eye, a car crash can wreak havoc without warning. If you are traveling with a young child, it is vital to make sure that your child is properly buckled up in a car or booster seat. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), children in age and size-appropriate car seats face a significantly reduced risk of suffering serious or fatal injuries.

Every year, millions of parents purchase child car seats to help keep their kids safe. Now, a new program organized by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) and the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (NY DMV) will teach parents about how to properly install car seats, and how to select the car seat that will most effectively protect their child in a crash.

This month, the GTSC and NY DMV will be offering free child car seat inspections for parents and caregivers statewide. Click here to find a free child car seat inspection event near you.

Unfortunately, motor vehicle injuries are the leading cause of death for USA children. Here are some troubling statistics about the dangers faced by young children:

• In 2013, 638 children under the age of 12 were fatally injured in motor vehicle accidents.
38% of children under 12 years old that were fatally injured in car accidents were not buckled up.
• One study found that more than 618,000 children between the ages of 0 and 12 actually rode in vehicles without wearing a seat belt some of the time.

In New York, all children under the age of 4 must ride in a child safety seat. All children must ride in a child restraint system until their 8th birthday, and all car seats and child restraint systems must be certified according to the Federal Motor Vehicles Safety Standard.

For more information on choosing a booster or car seat that is age and size-appropriate for your child, consult this helpful chart by the CDC.
