A ride in a limousine took a tragic and devastating turn for eight young New York women this past weekend when they were struck by a drunk driver. This terrible and avoidable accident occurred this past Saturday, July 18th as the women were returning home from a tour of a winery on Long Island.
Police say that the driver of a pickup truck had consumed several beers before getting in to his vehicle on Saturday evening. While his official Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) at the time of the accident has not been released, he was clearly in no condition to be behind the wheel of his vehicle. The intoxicated driver slammed into the side of the limousine as it was making a legal U-Turn near Cutchogue, NY.
The accident left four of the limo’s passengers fatally injured, and caused serious injuries to five others, including the limo driver. Making matters even worse, the intoxicated driver attempted to flee the scene of the accident on foot before being apprehended by police a short distance away.
The most frustrating aspect of this accident, however, is the fact that the victims in this case had made the responsible decision to hire a limo to take them home after an evening of drinking. They knew that they should not endanger other drivers on the road by attempting to drive home themselves, yet they were still victimized by a driver who did not make the same responsible decision.
Drinking and Driving is a hazard that remains far too common on New York’s roads and highways. At Fellows Hymowitz Rice, New York and New Jersey Car Accident and Personal Injury law firm, we want to remind all of our friends and neighbors that it is NEVER acceptable to get behind the wheel after drinking. Here are some disturbing statistics that illustrate the huge risks and dangers of drunk driving:
• In 2013, the most recent year for which data is available, New York drivers were involved in 364 drunk driving fatalities. This number represents 30.4% of all traffic deaths in the state in 2013, and increased more than 7% from 2012.
• A total of 29,977 New York drivers were arrested for DUI in 2013.
• There were a total of 8,368 alcohol related traffic accidents in New York in 2013, resulting in a total of more than 6,000 injuries.
• Drunk driving fatalities cost New York tax payers an estimated $2.5 billion in 2013.
Drinking and driving is one of the most irresponsible, reckless and negligent offenses a driver can commit. As illustrated by the horribly tragic accident that took place over the weekend, the actions of one drunk driver can permanently impact the lives of victims, as well as their friends and families. The women riding home in that limo this weekend had done nothing wrong, and yet they now are faced with terrible tragedy and painful rehabilitation for those that survived the accident.
