How did Memorial Day weekend sneak up on us so fast! Before you know it, it will be July 4th and then Labor Day. What this means is that if you plan to enjoy the summer with your family and friends, make sure it happens, because before you know it, the temperature will be dropping.
I’m sure you know that Memorial Day weekend is one of the busiest travel times of the year. If you are on the highway, you will probably notice increased volume of traffic. This is why wearing a seat belt is especially important if you are on the road, even if it’s just a short drive around the block. Fasten up and make sure your passengers do that as well. Car crashes can happen in a split second without warning.
Just a heads up, that starting this past Monday, 5/23 and continuing through Sunday, 6/5, state and local police in New York will be stepping up enforcement of seat belt safety. This is part of an initiative called the Click It or Ticket Campaign, a national program aimed at reducing injuries and fatalities when people do not buckle up.
Police will be setting up checkpoints. State and local police will be targeting motorists not buckled up. In New York, seat belt non-use will cost you a ticket and a stiff fine.
The good news is that seat belt use has been steadily increasing nationwide. But lack of proper seat belt safety remains a serious public health issue according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Here are some troubling facts about seat belt safety:
• In 2015, nearly 50% of people that were fatally injured in traffic accidents were not wearing a seat belt.
• In 2014 alone, seat belts saved an estimated 12,802 lives.
• In New York in 2014, 105 people killed in motor vehicle accidents were unrestrained.
Wearing a seat belt is the most effective way to minimize your risk of serious injury and death. According to the Center for Disease Control, using a seat belt reduces your risk of serious crash related injuries or death by about 50%. We encourage you and your passengers to buckle up.
