Yet again, there is another automobile manufacturer in the hot seat due to recalls which should have taken place years ago. The New York Times reports that more than 14 million vehicles have been recalled by 11 automakers over rupture risks involving air bags manufactured by the Japanese supplier, Takata.
Two deaths and over 30 injuries are known to have been linked to ruptures in Honda vehicles. Complaints received by regulators about various automakers blame Takata air bags for at least 139 injuries, including 37 people who reported air bags that ruptured or spewed shrapnel or chemicals. One method for improving highway safety and protecting drivers from unsafe conditions is through automobile recalls. It is estimated, over the past 50 years, almost 300 million cars, trucks, busses, recreational vehicles, motorcycle and mopeds, as well as 43 million tires and 84 million pieces of motor vehicle equipment, including child safety seats, have been recalled to correct safety defects. That averages out to 6,000,000 defective vehicles annually.
Once a defect determination is made, the law gives the manufacturer three options for correcting the defect: repair, replacement or refund. If your injuries were caused by a possible defective vehicle or part, it is in your best interest to contact a product liability lawyer.
